THE TALE OF A TAIL

Members of the parrot family (and other birds as well, I suspect) lose feathers as new ones grow in underneath. That way they are always full-feathered. At least that’s the way it is supposed to work.

Of course my cockatiel Pepper does like to do things differently from time to time. I don’t know how she got to be so stubby-tailed, as in the first pic, but I started taking pictures about two weeks ago. You can blame me for some fuzzy looking shots.

That's some tail she hasn't got there.
Meet Ms Stubby Tail.

Oh! Just a little bit of growth, perhaps a quarter of an inch.

Well, well. Something is happening!

A bit more, perhaps.

It will even grow when she is snoozing. That's my
box of music CD's on which she is napping.

That does look longer, doesn't it? Now she
sleeps on my CD blanks.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere.

She decided to pose while sitting on my leg.

Now that's really coming along. Even a wing
feather is taking shape.

This last pic I took from my photo files. She
will look like this in about a week.

  1. They grow out so fast...

Had a finch here that lost its tail entirely, probably while escaping the claws of the neighbor's cat. It wobbled funny when it flew or landed but kept on going, and since that one was easy to spot, I got to watch the tail grow back in until the bird blended back into the flock outside.
