FAMOUS AUTHOR COMES TO VISIT

It was just a delight to see author and old friend Judy, who dropped by for a visit yesterday morning.  Judy, who now lives in Oregon, is visiting friends and relatives here in California. I had not seen her for more than 20 years, but I must confess that aside from some graying hair, she looks just as young and vibrant as I remembered her from so many years ago.

I refer to her as a famous author because she has now written two books about the bridges on the Oregon coast. Her first bridges book, Crossings, was a history of the Conde McCullough designed bridges in the early 30’s. Her second book is on the same general topic, but with quite a different purpose. This newer book, titled The Crossings Guide to Oregon’s Coastal Spans, is, as the title suggests, a guide and description of every bridge on the Oregon coast from the Columbia River to nearly the California border.  Her next book, she tells me, will be about animals. I’m looking forward to that.

Judy taught in the Los Gatos elementary school district, as did my wife. Then in 1985 she and her husband moved to Oregon. Amalie and I visited them once, probably in the early 90s.  Today we had a great time swapping stories of our latest adventures, and I was sorry when it was time for her to leave.

I’m hoping that she will have time on her next to California visit to drop in and see me again.

THE TEXAN

A Texan lands in Sydney, Australia, and is picked up by a taxi. After requesting a tour of the city, he starts into a tirade about the small town airport and how in Texas they have larger runways on their ranches.  They are soon crossing the Sydney Harbor bridge, and the man is further unimpressed: "I have a duck pond bigger that that harbor, and an ornamental bridge to span it that makes this look like a toy." The Sydney-Newcastle Expressway also gets his scorn: "Is this a road, or a track?" So when a kangaroo jumps out in front of the cab, causing the sudden and severe application of the brakes, the driver can’t help himself: "Stupid grass hoppers!"

  2. Nothing like spending time with an old friend! I have one coming for a visit near the end of the month, and we can hardly wait!
