WEIRD STRUCTURES

I have posted other strange and weird buildings before, but I think that most, if not all, are different from the previous ones.

I couldn't carry one of those.

I think this is beautiful

I think this is ugly.

S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.

That stands for "Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America".
And Saturday I was most fortunate to be invited by my friend Boyd to attend such an event.  Even better, they made it into an ice cream social.  “Three flavors,” Boyd told me, “Vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.”  Of course I had chocolate, and later learned that it came from Baskin Robbins.  No wonder it tasted so good!

The program consisted of several quartets, plus a chorus, plus a sing-along.  A lot of fun.  Now if you’ve never heard of barbershop quartets, these are a group of four - either men or women -- singing a capella, usually, but not limited to pretty old songs.  If you need more information, try Google.

A C-130 was lumbering along when a cocky F-16 flashed by.
The jet jockey decided to show off.
The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, ' watch this! ' and promptly went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb..

He then finished with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16 pilot asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?

The C-130 pilot said, ' That was impressive, but watch this! '

The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130 pilot came back on and said: ' What did you think of that? '

Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, ' What the heck did you do? '

The C-130 pilot chuckled.
' I stood up, stretched my legs, walked to the back,
took a leak,  then got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll. '

PLAYING GAMES

The other day at Avenidas, Audrey, one of the staff members conducted a program about remembering how things used to be.  At one point she told us that when her dad took her and her 6 other siblings on a long drive, they played games that included trying to remember words that began with a particular letter.  And she had us giving words beginning with the letter “A”.  It was a bit of fun, and afterwards I told her that I’d enjoyed it.  I also mentioned that I make my own greeting cards.  Audrey said she’d like to see a sample, so I, with my peculiar sense of humor, made one for her.  She loved it!

The husband was in real trouble.  He had forgotten his wife’s birthday, and she was furious!  “By tomorrow morning,” she told him, “I want to see something in the driveway that goes from zero to 60 in less than 10 seconds!”

The next morning she looked out the window and saw a small package sitting in the driveway.  Puzzled, she rushed down to pick up the package, and tore it open to see what it was.  Turned out to be a bathroom scale.

BRAVE MOUSE

When I saw the first photo, I thought the mouse would be a meal.  Amazing!

One Hungry, Determined Little Mouse!
This extraordinary scene was captured by photography student Casey Gutteridge at the Santago Rare Leopard  Project in Hertfordshire, England.

The 19-year-old, from Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, who was photographing the leopard for a course project, was astounded by the mouse's behaviour. He said: 'I have no idea where the mouse came from - he just appeared in the enclosure after the keeper had dropped in the meat for the leopard.
'He didn't take any notice of the leopard, just went straight over to the meat and started feeding himself. 'But the leopard was pretty surprised - she bent down and sniffed the mouse and flinched a bit like she was scared. 'In the meantime the mouse just carried on eating like nothing had happened.'

..but even a gentle shove does not deter the little creature from getting his fill.  'It was amazing to watch. Even the keeper who had thrown the meat into the enclosure was shocked - he said he'd never seen anything like it before.' Project owner Jackie James added: 'It  was so funny to see -
Sheena batted the mouse a couple of times to try to get it away from her food. 'But the determined little thing took no notice and just carried on.' Sheena was brought in to the Santago Rare Leopard Project from a UK zoo when she was just four months old. She is one of 14 big cats in the private collection started in 1989 by Jackie's late husband Peter.  The African Leopard can be found in the continent's forests, grasslands, savannas, and rainforests.

.....so the mouse continued to eat the leopard's lunch and show the leopard just who was boss. Proves no one can push you around without your permission.

SAD ANNIVERSARY

This is the second anniversary of my dear wife’s death.  I know you can tell from my postings that I think of her often.  Last night she was in my dreams.

***
My little cockatiel Pepper (the female of the species) is in egg-laying mode.  Of course her eggs are not fertile, but that does not seem to deter her.  She doesn’t like to foul her nest -- it’s at the bottom of a small waste basket -- so when she can no longer hold it, she climbs out and poops on the carpet.  Here comes the clean-up crew!

Fun --

Two old friends meet on the street.  They haven’t seen each other long time, and are delighted to see one another.  “Harry”, says George, “you and your wife must come for dinner sometime soon.”  They make the appropriate arrangements, and on the appointed evening Harry and his wife arrive for dinner.  The meal is just delightful, and when they are done, the wives retire to the kitchen to chat (and clean up), while the gentlemen go to the living room.  “I must tell you, George,” says Harry, “your wife is a marvelous cook.  But if you ever want to eat out, just last week my wife and I discovered a great little restaurant.”  “Great idea,” says George.”  “What’s the name of the restaurant?”
“Um, I need the name of a flower,” says Harry.
“You mean like petunia?”
“No, no, a red flower”
“Carnation?”
“No, the one with thorns.”
“Oh,you mean rose.”
“Yeah, yeah, that’s it.  ROSE,” he hollers, “what was the name of that restaurant we went to last week?”

MUSICAL INTERLUDE

At Avenidas they play music CD’s at lunch time.  I asked if they wanted any more music, and was given an affirmative answer.  So I made up one of my most favorite play lists (a few of you, Alison, Diana and LynnM) know which one I mean, and yesterday I delivered it.  It was played at noon, and one of the staff was humming along as she helped serve lunch.

And that reminded me of something that had happened many years ago, before Amalie and I were married. We belonged to the local Jewish Community Center young adult group  that usually held its events and dances at the center, but there was one time when the hall was not available to us on the night we wanted.  Somebody discovered that we could rent the local YMCA hall, but they had certain restrictions on its use.  For one, we had to supply our own music, but their technician would be the one to operate the sound system.

Now this was long before the days of CD’s or DVD’s, but I had a reel-to-reel recorder, and a way to transcribe music onto blank tape.  (I don’t remember how.)  Anyway, Amalie and I made up a reel of the music we liked, and brought it to the dance.  The evening’s festivities started, and the technician played our tape. I was hoping the music was suitable.  Couples started dancing.  And then I noticed something I’d never heard before -- they were singing on the dance floor!
