SURE, SUHR

Many years ago -- 70, 75 -- there was a first baseman for the then San Francisco Seals baseball team by the name of Gussie Suhr (pronounced ‘sewer’).  These days the Police Chief in San Francisco is Greg Suhr (pronounced ‘sir’).

John Madden, in his morning sports talk said he wondered if the two were related, and if so, why the change in pronunciation?  The radio announcers said they didn’t know, but would try to look it up.  Maybe one of the listeners would call in and let them know.  Sure enough, a listener did call in -- the police chief himself!  Yes, old Gussie was a distant relative.  Why the change in pronunciation?  The chief responded with, “Did you ever go to grammar school with the name ‘sewer’?”  ‘Nuff said.

PUZZLEMENT

There was an item in the paper the other day about the dramatic increase in calls from motorists who have run out of gas.  It seems that with the price of gas over $4 a gallon, there are motorists who are reluctant to pull into a gas station, and spend all that money.  But they keep driving, and, guess what -- cars don’t run on empty.

Pardon me, but I don’t get it.  If one must drive, one is required to make the vehicle drivable.  My own strategy is to gas up when the tank is half empty.  That way I pay only half as much per fill.  Yes, I know, I fill twice as often.  But I’m not running out of gas!

KITTY CATS

Mostly little -- some bigger.

Fun -

Three women are having lunch.  One woman says, “My son is a Bishop, and when he comes into a room, all the people say ‘Your Grace’.”

The second woman says, “MY son is a cardinal, and when he walks into a room, everyone says ‘Your Excellency’.”

The third woman, a little Jewish lady, says, “My son is six feet 4 inches tall, very handsome, broad shoulders, narrow waist, and a full head of beautiful hair, and when he comes into a room, all the women say, ‘Oh my God’!”

SEA LIFE, PART 3

Here is some more beautiful sea life.  A very few odd comments by me.

Especially for Diana.

ON THE SEASHORE

A young couple at the beach noticed a lady with a bag over her shoulder going from group on the sand. They noticed that the lady would stop and talk to the people, and occasionally reach into her bag, give something to the people, and receive money in return. The couple wondered if she was selling drugs. Then they noticed that the lady only stopped where the group had a boom box, and since one young couple did not have one, the lady did not visit them.

After a bit the young man said to his wife, “I’m going to find out what she is doing,” and he moved farther down the beach. A while later he came back, grinning. “I know what she is doing -- She’s selling batteries for the boom boxes. She sells C cells by the seashore.”

SEA LIFE, Part 2

Here are some more creatures of the deep, and perhaps not so very deep.  One thing that astonishes me is the range and brightness of color.  No comments necessary, and I don't know what many of these creatures are called, but I especially like the purple seahorses, about the ninth pic down.

The small crowd watched for 15 minutes while the surf fishing man struggled to haul in something big.  The drama ended when his catch turned out to be a waterlogged 4x4.  Then one of the onlookers called out, “What did you use for bait?  Your Home Depot card?”

BACK IN SERVICE

I suppose there have been some of you wondering why my daily posting didn't happen this morning. Well! as Jack
Benny might have said.  It's quite a story.

Several days ago my internet connection started running r e a l l y,   r  e  a  l  l  y    s   l   o   w  .  So on Sunday I called my internet service provider to see what could be done.  Tech had me run a few tests, after which I had no dial tone and no internet connection.  Fortunately, the dial tone came back about 30 minutes later.  Unfortunately the DSL connection did not. Back to the ISP.  After more time on the phone, I was told that a technician would have to come out to try to resolve the problem.  On Wednesday.  No good, I said.  Must be tomorrow.  Ultimately it was agreed that a technician would be out between 9 am and 1 pm.  Cliff agreed to stay home and wait.  By 1:30, no technician.  So I again called the ISP (who, you will notice, is remaining nameless).

Now what followed bordered on the absurd -- I’m just not sure which side of the border.  Here I am on hold while tech is trying tho reach Dispatch.  And she is on hold while Dispatch is trying to reach the field  technician.  And the field technician is on his phone trying to reach me, but is getting a busy signal because ... (cycle back to “Here I am on hold”.  Eventually I hung up, and eventually the field technician showed up.  If I get to post this, you will know that this mess has been fixed.

Homemade cartoon --

I opened up the morning paper the other day, and among the various sections was a group of ads.  One of them -- well actually two, but they were bound together -- was the following.  If you don’t find it funny, it is at least intriguing.

UNUSUAL ANIMALS

(Before we begin, allow me to tell you that starting Thursday evening into Friday morning, Google had the bloggers shut down fr -- whatever.  Which is why you might have kept seeing the same thing over and over.  Let us continue.)

Animals of all kinds make interesting subjects.  The captions are mine.

I’ll exercise when I feel like it!
