MOMENTOUS DATE #1 plus ...

Today, January 21, 2010, is a momentous date in history! What? You don't know what it is? Well, not too surprising, I suppose. On this date 40 years ago, Amalie and I had our first date. There are two more momentous dates to come.

***

I do occasional book reviews for our mobilehome park magazine. I only do those that I can heartily recommend. This is one:

FLIRTING WITH PETE
A novel by Barbara Delinsky
Reviewed by Don Meyer

Casey Ellis has never talked to her father, nor he to her. She is the product of a one night stand. Oh, she knows who he is -- a renowned psychologist and author. She has even attended some of his college classes. So that when he dies of a massive heart attack, she is absolutely astonished to learn that he has left her his expensive townhouse on ritzy Beacon Hill in Boston. It even comes with fully paid housekeeper and gardener. At first she is tempted to sell it and use the proceeds to pay for the nursing care of her mother who has been comatose for the past three years following an accident. But circumstances intervene, and in the process of going through the belongings in the house, she finds an incomplete document about a young girl, Jenny, who has been sexually abused by her father and emotionally abused by her mother. It is not clear if this is fiction, part of a case study, or the exaggerated ramblings of some individual.

Barbara Delinsky weaves together the various threads of this fascinating story, as Casey tries to learn more of the personal life of her father, reconcile herself to her mother’s condition, and her search for Jenny, if she is real. The ultimate outcome is quite surprising.

I heartily recommend this book, and it is readily available at the public library.

UNDER WATER

These are the clearest, most astonishing underwater shots I have ever seen! Enjoy!

I think that's a turtle.

This is a most unusual photo in that part is above water and part below.

I think that's a cameraman at right center.

Humor --
(This one cracked me up).

Recently, in a large city in France , a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym. It said, "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

A middle-aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym.

To Whom It May Concern: Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans.) They have an active sex life, get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Bering Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world.

Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them, not to mention how could they have sex? Just look at them ... where is IT? Therefore, they don't have kids either. Not to mention, who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store?

The choice is perfectly clear to me: I want to be a whale.

P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver, and a piece of chocolate with my friends.

With time, we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room, it distributes out to the rest of our bodies.
So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy.
Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, ¨Good grief, look how smart I am!¨

STREET GANGS ...

...IN HELENA, MONTANA

It's gangs like these that the people of Helena have to put up with. A bit different from the problems in other cities...

It proves that every State has their own "unique" gang problems. They
roam the streets and yards night and day.

They hang out in even the best neighborhoods! ..and you CANNOT (legally) stop them..

Just relax, fellas.

Cartoon fun --

They need to repave the street.

I'm losing track. Did I show this one before?

THE RIGHT ANSWER

While attending a Marriage Weekend, Walter and his wife, Ann, listened to the instructor declare, 'It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.."

He then addressed the men, 'Can you name and describe your wife's favorite flower?'
Walter leaned over, touched Ann's arm gently, and whispered, 'Gold Medal-All-Purpose, isn't it?'

ODDS AND ENDS

I know I’m way late with this, but thanks to Bill Dorais, Diana Troldahl, Alison Hyde, and LynnM for their comments on my blog.

Yesterday (Saturday), the plumber came by to install the seat riser on my toilet. A plumber? well, this is no ordinary item. This actually bolts to the toilet itself, and then he fastened my old toilet seat to the riser. The whole thing works well. The plumber’s only concern was that sitting that high, I might get a nosebleed.

When I was growing up, the family used to refer to the bathroom as the Throne Room, and of course you know what the Throne was. Well, that’s not too bad a description for my present arrangement.

Previews of coming attractions:

I’m getting photographs via email faster than I can post them. In the coming days you can look forward to more animals, birds, and some photos of absolutely fantastic paintings.
