Want some examples?  Try this:  how do you pronounce
            OUGH  ?
Depends.  Put a B in front of it, and you get
            BOUGH        (ow!)
But put a C in front of it, and look what happens -
            COUGH        (off)
Try it with a D -
            DOUGH            (oh)
This is amazing - THROUGH      (ooh!)
But this is ridiculous -  TOUGH    (buff)
Did I miss any possibilities?
All this leads us to an interesting question.  There is a street in San Francisco named GOUGH.  How do you suppose that is pronounced?  Gow?  Gawf?  Go?  Goo?  Guff?  Answer below*
ENOUGH, awready.
How about a couple of cartoons!
*Goff
See you on Monday morning, Pacific Daylight Time

Is THAT how you say it! Young man, you wouldn't give me any guff on that, right?
ReplyDeleteIn New Jersey/Long Island it's got two syllables, 'ought' sounding to me like "ooh-aht."
